Hello and welcome to the Overclocked Remix Podcast. My name is Zach, and I am not good at Mina the Hollower. Man! I've been following this game pretty closely. I backed it on Kickstarter, etc., etc. But for some reason, I was not expecting it to be basically Dark Souls but soundtrack, though. Jake Kaufman never disappoints. So anyway, this is episode number 19, which is the number of hexes in the only non-trivial magic hexagon. On this episode, we'll be covering all the new remixes from May 2026. And also, we'll have a bit of a crossover episode with another podcast. Our intro music coming in was More Might by Hype Dream from Shovel Knight. Let's get to the news. The game genres I like don't really work well with touch controls. And the mobile RPGs I have tried or just console RPGs anyway. So why am I messing with a touchdown? Why am I still keeping RDS in my pocket? Pocketable handheld. Counting all those reasonably emulation handhelds. Maybe I'm missing out on something great. Our news music this month was Digging Into Memories by Yoriko, Audio Mocha, and Stephen Kelly from Shovel Knight. Rolling and Lyric with J Martinez. Mega Man X has a three legendary sound. But I do think in the VGM arrangement community, the Sigma stages are a little underrepresented. You hear a lot of like Uber Wonger and Chill Penguin and Storm Eagle. You don't hear much so much Sigma Stage 1. Well that's gonna be fixed with an eight-minute rock rock medley, which listeners know is my jam. Um this is very specifically my jam, because this is some real Mars Volta stuff, and oh man. I love the Mars Volta. It's loud, it's discordant, wailing sacks and changing tempo and complex rhythm, and some outright references to the Mars Volta album ampitecture. Uh, if you like this, I highly recommend you go check out that album. So the next track we had in that block was Doma Doma by Fishy from Hollow Knight, and dang! It has been almost nine years since Fishy's last mixed post, which was the lovely Vamo a la Django covering Final Fantasy IX Vamo alla Flamengo. Well, this is a completely different track and style. This is a more instrumental metal. Uh some really cool stuff in here that reminds me of Sonic Adventure era Crush 40. Changing tack entirely. Our next track was The Laboratory Liberator by Blue Lighter from Final Fantasy VIII. So Blue Lighter is uh a little famous for solo piano Final Fantasy tracks, and Blue Lighter's notes from this mix post are a little nuts. So he apparently took the original sheet music, transposed it to the key of F because why not, adapted the time signature to 11 over 8, and then improvised a bunch. So, sure, just casually improvise a 4-4 melody to 11-8. Whatever, no big deal. Really, exotic meter does give the track a bit of this unbalanced, wobbly feel. Closing out that block, we had Cliffhanger from Contra by Just Coffee, who Just Coffee has brought us some classic toe-tapping, head bobbing, electronica. This is the kind of music I like to listen to when I really need to focus on some work or something. As Dilek points out in the mix post, we don't get a lot of contra submissions, so it's great to have more contra representation. We are not done with mixed posts from the new Star Fox album, and this is an intense one. Metal and Industrial. Xalif cites the Descent 2 soundtrack as an inspiration, and dang! Maybe I should have played the Descent games. I remember wanting to play them back in the day, but there was this whole thing with my mom not wanting me to play non-edutainment titles on the PC, and also just back in the day, finding a specific computer game could be pretty challenging. Next track was The Summer Reefs by the Docks by Lucas Guimares, Roland and Laracuinte Martinez, and Eminator. That's from Kirby64. Lo-Fi beats to eat your enemies to. And wow! This is such a different vibe from the original. Kirby just has a completely different vibe in this genre. It's not the bouncy, jaunty, excited Kirby music that I expect. I just I don't have the words for how this has changed my perception of the original track. And moving on to some more Kirby goodness, we have The Deepest Layer of the Kirby Iceberg by JN Wake from Kirby's Dreamland 3. So keeping on with more Kirby, this is much closer to the vibe of the original track than the Summer Reefs by the Docks was. Which isn't always a good thing. That's not necessarily praise. I like seeing creative takes of the source material. But here it's definitely a good thing because, as I think a lot of VGM aficionados know, the track Iceberg from Dreamland 3 is the closest that Kirby music has ever gotten to Krog, and do I really need to mention again my feelings about Krog? JN Wake also snuck this track into the Dwelling of Duels Cats versus Dogs Month, because one of the ridable animal buddies in Kirby's Dreamland 3 is a cat. That's very sneaky. Alright, short block for the last one, we've got Our Wing Dreams by Blind from Star Fox, and oh yeah! Now this is Star Fox music. You guys might recall me gushing over this track in particular when I interviewed Dark Flame Wolf around the time Double Wing Damage released, and I hope you can hear why. Our last new track of the month was UA's Light, I hope I'm pronouncing that correctly. This is by Oceans Andrew and Thomas Kolgrove from Genshin Impact. So, between now and the last time we had a Genshin track, I actually played Genshin Impact. How about that? I played for about an hour and a half before I decided all the mobile game stuff was not for me. I'd just much rather buy a game than all the microtransactions buy this currency to get this thing. But dang, I did enjoy the soundtrack, and this remix has a really uplifting rock ballad feel to it, which is something that I think Ocean's Andrew does really well. So I sat down with the hosts of the podcast Beeps Bops and Beeps. Boy, is that difficult to say, to do an overclocked remix show and tell. I was excited to do this because I knew two of the hosts had some mild familiarity with OCR, but like a lot of us fell off of it at some point. I host the OCR podcast, and I fell off of OCR at some point. Uh, and the third host, Enthusiastic Newby. So without further ado, let's do some OCR show and tell crossover episode. SPEAKER_01And I'm Chris. Uh yeah. So we're gonna do like an overclocked remix show and tell type thing. But before we get into it, I what what is everyone's history with OC Remix? I go, oh, nope, sorry. Ladies first.
SPEAKER_02I was I was saying like I uh for some by some miracle, I guess, I completely missed overclocked remix growing up, which is wild to me because I was the one that was shaking the internet for all of like the remixes and just any video game music I could find. And so I have no idea how I just completely bypass this whole community of the internet. Um, so I'm a new recruit. Uh and for your pod, for you know your podcast here, I am listener number three. You are upgraded to three listeners.

SPEAKER_02Uh but no, I I recently just started diving in through the massive back catalog, and I'm loving all of the variety that you guys have here. It's great.
SPEAKER_01It's it's a little mind-boggling, uh, just the the size of it. Uh I you know, I I I have these like giant playlists on my PC of OC remixes, and sometimes it's like, oh yeah, this playlist is 14 days long.
SPEAKER_04Nice. Somehow still shorter than one piece. Sorry. Uh I've been listening to it on and off for years, like way, way back in the old days of internet work. It would take 20 minutes to download a song and you hope that it's a good one. So you kind of just pulled from games that you knew and like kind of hoped for yeah, what you got was a banger. Um, and I know that over the years I fell away from checking out just because of you know, different interests and hobbies and stuff like that, and just didn't keep up with it. And then now and then every like two or three years I'll pop back in. I'm like, oh, this is awesome. You know, whether they started uh moving things over to Torrents or you know, even just when they started uploading everything to YouTube, so it was easier to listen to. But um going like even one of the picks I'm bringing today goes back to I think it's entry number 222 back from like 2000. Um but yeah, I I I was fighting real hard. I was talking to Laura about this, like picking my songs, not to just pick the oldest things ever, because I've been listening to them for two decades at this point, you know, if not more.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I I myself date from the era of overclocked remakes, which was um uh better hope that no one in the family picks up the phone while you're downloading the Soci Remix.
SPEAKER_02The good old days.
SPEAKER_01The good old days. Um yeah. Uh and I also, you know, uh I host the podcast now, but I also fell off of it for a while. There was a decent chunk of time where every time there was like a big new album release, I'd go download that, but I wasn't, you know, paying attention to the regularly posted songs or anything.
SPEAKER_04Uh sorry, I was just gonna say it's it's just been a real fun evolution too over the years to see because what I knew was OC Remix stuff, and then now you've got all these like other proper arrangements, I guess, full albums of people releasing stuff that you know I either heard back in the day on OC Remix, um, them all grown up and doing indie uh game soundtracks. So it's cool to see like the the the community that started there and how it continued to grow into like, oh yeah, they're actually making just game soundtracks now.
SPEAKER_01It's yeah, super cool. Um heck uh did any of you guys play Helldivers 2?
SPEAKER_02I did not, but I love seeing all of the videos of them.
SPEAKER_01So the composer of Helldivers 2 got his start on OC Remix. Uh username Bustatunes. Uh yeah. Uh so now everyone at OC Remix can brag that, like, oh yeah, Grammy nominated composers got their start here. That's fantastic.
SPEAKER_03Uh Josh, how about you? So for me, I learned about OC Remix actually through Chris. Um probably like 16, 17, maybe 18 years ago now, he and I did a podcast. Um it was me, him, his brother, and another friend of ours, like just talking video game stuff in general. We were kind of like a you know topic of the week, just talking about our own video game experiences and and and stuff like that. Anyway, he was grabbing stuff from OC Remix to use as like a little intro song. He'd just grab a random one and then asked someone once, where did where where is this version of this song? I don't remember which one it was now, and then he pointed me towards OC Remix. And then for me, it's just been a thing. I you know I'll I'll go months without even thinking about it, and then I'll check in, listen to a couple things, and then not go back for a while. It's just kind of an on and off thing for me to check it out every once in a while.
SPEAKER_04If I were to put money on it, I'd say the song that probably that turned you was I know I used a Meg Man uh Wiley's Castle Remix. I bet you that's the one that you're like, hey buddy, where do I get this?
SPEAKER_03Probably that would sound accurate. Uh I I say put it down in the books.
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah. Um well cool. Do we want to get started with our first pick? Uh I believe uh Josh, this is the the one we're gonna start with is your first pick. Do you wanna talk it about a little first and then we'll pick mash go?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so I am choosing from the game Solstice, the title screen theme, which I brought originally to our very first episode of our show when we were talking about big themes um and things that just really stuck with us from and this was I I said in our show, the first song from a video game that made me think video game music could be real music, that was the first time I remember thinking, oh wow, this is this isn't just good video game music, this is just good music.
SPEAKER_01Um and then you had to suffer through realizing no one but Tim Fallen can really do music like this.
SPEAKER_02The man's a wizard.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_03So the game Solstice was uh from 1990, it was a puzzle adventure game. Uh it was developed by a software creations published by SG Image C SG Image Soft. So the Super Nintendo you play as this wizard named Shadax, which I always hated that name. It doesn't sound like a good wizard name.
SPEAKER_01Um I mean it's got an X in it, which I think is good, but other than that, it's a terrible wizard name.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, unless you're an evil wizard. A good evil wizard name, but not the protagonist's wizard name.
SPEAKER_01Agreed, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um you gotta infiltrate this fortress to gain uh the pieces of the uh staff of Demnos, which is the subtitle for the the the game, and you uh use it to beat an evil wizard and save a princess. It's this isometric puzzle platformer that I just I know I never be. It frustrated the hell out of me, but uh opening track with like blew my ten-year-old little brain apart.
SPEAKER_01So everyone's brain apart. Well, let's let's hit play. Okay.
SPEAKER_03That was the title screen of Solstice uh remixed by Prince of Darkness. Um I've man, I I jam out to the just original NES version myself all the time in the car, and when I found that version for the purposes of this particular uh recording, I was like, oh yeah, I'm I gotta bring this.
SPEAKER_01I I think what gets me about that remix, so like uh some remixes get very creative with the arrangement where it's like, oh yeah, I can hear little bits of the original melody in there, but uh there's a lot of original material.
SPEAKER_03Right, barely the same song anymore.
SPEAKER_01Right, barely the same song anymore. Uh but then some remixes are like, hey, I'm gonna take a great source tune and just make it even greater. Uh that's what this did.
SPEAKER_04Um like it it yeah, it it selected the song and it hit bold is what it did, and it was good.
SPEAKER_03If I only had one critique for the remixer, it would be that that opening part of it is like mixed really low, and uh I done that missed for me, but the rest of the whole remix is awesome.
SPEAKER_01Uh the so the the Super Marcado Brothers uh podcast, they they often talk about how like in the old chiptunes, a lot of the really good chiptune writers would write chiptune music so that you could imagine what the instruments would be. And I think uh Tim Fallon was really good at that, and I think Prince of Darkness absolutely chose the right instruments. Like, yeah, there's awesome guitar, but also incredible 70s Prague synth solos, right? Like what's not to love.
SPEAKER_02Exactly. Like it does sound like it it does sound like how the original did because again, Tim was just amazing at just composing for video games, but it was just it is so well done, and it definitely transitions into this just like a live like a live play so well. Yeah. He did the greatest.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely true. Like there's an awesome guitar, but also incredible seventies frog synthesis, right? Like what's not to love.
SPEAKER_02Exactly, like it does sound like it it does sound like how the original did because again, Tim was just amazing at just composing for video games, but it was just it is so well done, and it definitely transitions into this just like alive, like a live play so well. It's yeah, the the bit he did great, good job. Gold stars all around.

SPEAKER_03I just wonder if you said that about the you know like I because I've heard other versions of this before, but all of them all just tend to be like guitars, like just guitars everywhere, which don't don't sound terrible, but like your point about him going into well, I'm still just gonna use like a synth, you know, keyboard type of thing for some of these parts or or a synth guitar or something. Whatever there's whatever instrument he's using there is not a guitar, it's you know, it it's it's it it's almost sounds more like NES chiptune than a guitar would, you know, and it it's awesome.
SPEAKER_01I love that it does, but it also, you know, it sounds like more in line with I think what was probably the original inspiration for this piece, which was Rush, which was yes, which was Gentle Giant, uh King Crimson, you know, all of that.
SPEAKER_04Um until it was mentioned on the on our listen there, I didn't even click like yes, this is absolutely just rush, and it is awesome.
SPEAKER_03Yes. Also, a note about the game is it had really rad box art.
SPEAKER_01Oh my gosh. Uh so the box art I'm fairly sure is just like a portrait of Tim Fallen.
SPEAKER_03Well, it's funny you say that because there's a there's a comment on the my go-to video to when I want to hear it, which says it was really nice of the game uh designers to put Tim Follin on the cover of their game.
SPEAKER_02The man's a wizard. It's it's just a factual portrait.
SPEAKER_01An incredibly muscular wizard that clearly just got done ripping off his shirt.
SPEAKER_02He got all the muscles for shredding on the guitar. That's you know how he got the muscles.
SPEAKER_04Exactly. I was gonna say, you shred that hard, it just kind of happens.
SPEAKER_01Uh well, Chris, I think uh our next pick is yours. Do you want to introduce it a little?
SPEAKER_04Yes, sir. All right. So what I'm gonna be bringing to the table is probably one of the earlier songs that I've heard from OC Remix. And sure enough, it is one of the older ones. Uh, going back to December of 2000 was when it was initially pulled there, but it's gonna be coming from Batman on NES, uh released in 1989, original composers of Aoki Kodaka and Nobuyuki Hara. Um, but this remix is gonna be from Stephen Kennedy, and it's called Music of Funk. And it is just whenever I think OCR, because I'm an old guy, uh, I immediately go back to like, hey, how can we techno-remix this this Chiptune song? And this is the epitome of what OCR was me for me for the longest time. So, like the soul song we just listened to is a beautiful glow-up of what it was imagined. This is just like, nah, let's just make it funky and electronic. And I was like, Yes, this is awesome.
SPEAKER_01So so is this the the Batman game, the like the Sunsoft Batman game that was a genuinely awesome, like Mega Man style platformer?
SPEAKER_04Yes, it rules. Yeah, and the music, the music rules too. I actually um it unintentionally, uh Joshua made a mention, like, hey, what kind of stuff are you guys bringing? It's like, oh, I'm just gonna bring whatever, and then I end up bringing some stuff that like we brought the original songs to you know our BBB podcast. Unintentionally, it's just these songs are awesome, and they're even awesomer through OCR. So um, yeah, no, it's just it's just like great punch things, things that are robotslash not robotslash not really in the Batman movie, but it's somehow a Batman movie tie-in. It's just awesome though.
SPEAKER_03It is a Batman movie tie-in I saw Jack Nicholson in that game.

SPEAKER_04So that Batman track was awesome. I hope you enjoyed it because I I listened to that back in college. I it turns out. I didn't realize that I was doing it. Um going through some of the comments on YouTube, I saw the college, the community college I went to from like 2003 to 2005, they were playing OC remix stuff, and that was in their regular rotation. And as soon as I read that, I remembered, oh my god, yes, I do remember listening to that in school.
SPEAKER_02That is still wild to me. That is just on a radio, is insane.
SPEAKER_04Well, I thought it was even more wild how hyper-specific that, like, there's only like four comments in that video. One of them is referencing the community college I went to, like, out of all the places.
SPEAKER_01It is always fun hearing OC Remix in the wild. Like, it doesn't happen super often, but uh they do play OC Remix pretty regularly on games done quick content.
SPEAKER_04Which uh yeah. I used to think I was the coolest kid in town because I'd burn CDs listening to my awesome chiptune music.
SPEAKER_01Probably uh I definitely thought I was super cool doing that. Uh in retrospect, I question my assumptions.
SPEAKER_02I have so many burned OSTs from video games in my basement currently because I can't I can't part with them because you know I spent so many hours and days downloading this music. It's gotta live forever. Listen, old man. Alright.
SPEAKER_03That was a really awesome track, though. I'm I'm actually super glad you brought that one because uh as soon as it started up, I just like locked in. I I I knew what it was immediately, and I was ready for the drop um when it was goes into the doo-doo doo. I was like, couldn't wait for it to come in. And it it definitely made me wait for it, but it was worth it.
SPEAKER_02The little vocal stings and just in little hits are super great. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_04The system is down, like making fun of technomusic. This is that song it's making fun of, but it's awesome.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. Gosh. Uh I had not thought about that's wrong that email. I I guess technomusic, like I've talked about this on the podcast before. My only real exposure to this genre of music is either through video games or overclocked remakes. So like has techno do we even still call it techno? What's it doing now? I don't know. I don't know. I think it's definitely go ahead.
SPEAKER_02It still exists, but it's definitely a lot more. I think with all music, like there's a lot more like subsets of it. Um not just like there's techno's like the big blanket term, but then you've got all of the different little sub-genres and then the sub-subgenres, and it's it's just fun vibes, is what I go with. Does this make me want to dance or not? The answer is yes. I want to dance to Batman because that was rad.
SPEAKER_01That was rad. Well, let's um Laura, I think the next track is yours. Do you want to introduce it?
SPEAKER_02Uh yeah, I have a little bit of a vibe shift from EDM Batman to um A Cursed Land, which is a remix of Southern Swamp from Majora's Mask, which is a 2064 Zelda game, which is in my professional Zelda gameplaying opinion, the best Zelda game out of all of them. I know, I know I am uh in I am the minority here, but I it's so good. It was my first Zelda game. It that's where I started the game, like the game series. It's where I fell in love with the game series, even though I could not beat it. I couldn't even get out of the clock town. I yeah, it was it was very I needed a guide, and I it's the game's beloved. Um, but yeah, no, this uh remix is done by Shield Eater. Uh also uh his real person name is Chris McGee. Um used Southern Swamp as the source track. To me, it also sounds a little bit um just like the instrumentation. It sounds a little bit of Snow Peak Mountain. Um but he released this in March 2023, and this is just such a dark and funky version of this song. Um, and I'll give my thoughts a little bit about it after we come back. But yeah, this is A Cursed Land from Adora's Mask. Okay, yeah, so that was uh a funky mix of Southern Swamp, uh Cursed Land, and it's just it's such a unique and just groovy tune. I uh I listen to it. There's not nearly enough Majora's Max remixes on OCR, so uh I would like to shout that out to anybody that can actually put in the work. Give me more music, please. I would really, really love it. Yeah, that was I mean, there's a few.
SPEAKER_04I sorry, go ahead. No, look at you'll never be satisfied. There needs to just always be more.
SPEAKER_02Listen, looking at how many, you know, corridors of time versions there.
SPEAKER_01Well, yeah, a quarter of time has like 300 remixes or something.
SPEAKER_02And I've only got like 30 something for Majora's mask, it's sad. That's all I'm saying. No, I it's I would love a full album. Like, give me the whole soundtrack with this with Shield Eater. Give me a whole album, please, because this was rad. I love it.
SPEAKER_01I am a little surprised. Okay, there's apparently 31 Majora's mass tracks uh compared to 119 Ocarina of Time tracks.
SPEAKER_02I'm just saying it. It's good music. I know it's not as beloved, but it's good.
SPEAKER_04I think they got that ratio correct though. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_01That track though was ah that just incredible. Uh the saxophone was excellent.
SPEAKER_03Um it came out of nowhere too, but man, was it awesome when that that saxophone kicked in? Like I was not, I was very surprised by that.
SPEAKER_01It it really brings the vibes of Majora's Mask, which is you know, vaguely creepy and off-putting um in a way that only Zelda really pulls off.

SPEAKER_01Actually, yeah, thinking it thinking on the game, like even when you're in that area of the game, you're not hearing the southern swamp music a lot. Uh and this is from uh Super Mario RPG, which is one of my all-time favorite games. Um I think maybe I have of all the certainly of all the RPGs I've ever played, this is the one that I've replayed the most.

SPEAKER_01Oh yeah. Um do you guys have any history with Mario RPG?
SPEAKER_03When it first came out, um uh I bought it. I I was a square head like all through the 90s, like anything that's square, I was gonna an RPG, I was gonna buy it. So Mario also definitely was gonna was gonna buy it. My brain was like, I'm buying Final Fantasy slash Mario here. And it's not quite the same, but it had like you know timed inputs and stuff like that. But I I really enjoyed my time with it. That though I will say I have not played it since you know it first came out basically, but played it all the way through back then on the original hardware.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and I put in some time with the original, I don't remember it that well, but I was also not that big into RPGs at that time. Um but I recently uh we did a Yokoshimomoro podcast or episode and I was like, man, I really I really should get around to playing this remake of it, and you know, just for like reference, they always bang her music from her, so it's like and let me let me get some context, and I fired it up, and the next thing I know, 20 hours disappeared, so it was a good time.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I I mean, so I uh I am a uh admitted um uh what's his name? The guy that did all of the Kingdom Hearts games. Umura. I am an admitted Nomura hater. I despise Tetsu Nomura and all of the games he's ever made. But uh man, I do kind of want to play Kingdom Hearts just for the Yoko Shimora music. Uh I died a little when he said that, but we'll move on. Like, okay, maybe not all the games he's ever done. Like, I liked Final Fantasy VII, obviously. Um The World Ends With You on DS, fantastic game. I disagree, but I like the soundtrack a lot. Um I don't know. So uh The World End With You is like uh I played it, I beat it, and not once in the game did I ever feel like, yeah, I've got this now, I know what I'm doing, I'm good at this. Not even once.
SPEAKER_04That is a thousand percent accurate to the experience.
SPEAKER_02Oh man. Oh, that's great. That's I didn't play the remake of Mario RPG. I remember renting it from a blockbuster because it's a new Mario game, and I I know I did not beat it, but I was enamored with it because it was so different from literally every other Mario game that you've ever played at that point. And I really liked it, and then never bought it, never played it again, just the one time I rented it from a blockbuster for like a week and a half.
SPEAKER_01Oh man. Uh the remake is uh, I think should be in the textbook of how to make remakes. It's really really well done. I've never played a remake that was so faithful to the spirit of the original. But also so good at modernizing everything that needed to be modernized. Okay. Um but let's let's play this song. Alright, so that was Electric Monstro Carnival by DDR Kirby ISQ from Super Mario RPG Remix. And Chris was just saying that this is a goofball game, and it absolutely is. It's uh maybe one of the most laugh-out loud video games I've ever played.
SPEAKER_04I would agree. I I think the developers when they were making it were just like, let's have fun. Because like even goofy stuff like Boshi, like having all the different Yoshi, like I I forget the dude's name, but there's like just some dude who kidnaps the princess, and he's just I don't know, he's just such a weirdo, and like it's booster. It's all goofy. Yeah, booster, thank you. It's like everything, every character in this is a little guy, like you know, quote-unquote little guy, and they're all awesome.
SPEAKER_01Um yeah, so so the uh in an interview, the writers of the game at some point said, Oh yeah, when we were writing this game, we were really into Japanese stand-up comedy. So I I think that really uh shows itself in the humor of the game. Um gosh, Booster is such an all-timer little guy. Um I the cake boss fight, one of the all-time best boss fights. Um, yes, you do fight a cake at some point.
SPEAKER_04I mean, there's even one part where you're like hiding behind curtains, and it's just like, what the heck am I doing? Like, come on.
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah, it's also it's it's from that era of Square games where they were instead of just putting like one card game as a mini-game in their game, they were extremely dense with mini games. Uh you know, because you go from this where there's just like minigames everywhere, and uh gosh, I want to say the next thing they did after Mario RPG may have in fact been Final Fantasy VII, which has a whole area of the game that's nothing but mini games. Uh and then you move on to Final Fantasy uh, you know, eight, nine, and ten, which are all like, here, have a card game and or soccer.
SPEAKER_02God, I hated Blitzfall. I hated Blitzfall so much.
SPEAKER_04Let's not say things we can't take back, okay?
SPEAKER_02I am on record now multiple times saying that Majora's Mask is the best and Blitzfall is terrible.
SPEAKER_01I'm not gonna say I hated Blitzfall, but I will say I wish there were more mini games besides just Blitzfall.

So I I know all of the little guys, but I just have no relation to any of them. And like the music, all of the music I've ever heard from this game has been awesome. And this is just so good. I it's so great. Thank you. Thank you for breaking this. This is awesome.

SPEAKER_04Yeah, the uh the I like that song because like it just it was joyful and childlike like the entire way through, but like heavy with a chip tune. It almost I'm not sure if you're familiar with uh Animataguchi. Um like their solo, not solo album, but their individual album, not the Scott Pilgrim's off, um, Endless Fantasy. Yeah, oh I love that album, and the song feels like that, where it's just like warm hugs, warm digital hugs. Hugs.
SPEAKER_01Gosh, it's so bouncy and joyful, and then it does that bit where he brings in the Final Fantasy prelude, and it it sort of transcends that and for just a little bit becomes beautiful. And then it goes back to being happy and bouncy again. It's it's a great journey of a track.
SPEAKER_02It's one of my favorite like little genres of music that I'm glad exists because it it doesn't seem like it should work as music because like ah, it's just computer noises, but no, if you do it right, it's amazing stuff.

Um that's gonna be from the game of Bionica Commando, which I learned making my notes for your show today, was known in Japan as Hitler's Resurrection Poland Top Secret. Amazing.

SPEAKER_03I knew that from the Japanese release to the American release, like there was a lot of Nazi um um imagery that was changed in the in the uh localization over to the United States and Europe. Um but I did not know that the original name of the game was called Hitler's Resurrection.
SPEAKER_02That's wild. Yeah. I mean I guess if you're gonna take all the iconography out, you gotta change the name from Hitler's Resurrection to Bionic Commando.
SPEAKER_03Even though the game still ends, regardless of which um region you played in, with uh Hitler's head getting exploded by you. So Hitler's still in the game, regardless of the name or or um the Nazi.
SPEAKER_01It's it's crazy to me that they oh yeah, change the title. Oh, don't you don't need to change anything else in the game, it's fine.

SPEAKER_03And that was I actually didn't say before we went into it, but that was the music from Area One, originally composed by Junko Tamya and remixed by Star Salzman. Um, Junko Tamya also um Mega Man 3 and Little Nemo, uh some of her credits, and I think she kind of fell off. She was a lot of Capcom sound themed credits, and then just kind of fell off in the mid uh 90s and then uh early 90s, and then I don't think ever composed for video games again. Yeah, looking at this nothing past 1992, which is a shame.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that was good stuff, man. That was a good remix that you found.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I sorry, go ahead. I was just saying, I like that one, kind of like with the Solstice one, that one just took what the original track was and then just kind of lifted everything.
SPEAKER_04It did a heck of a lot of lifting, so I remember you bringing that song, and I love the snare drum buttons. I think I remember it only being like 50 seconds or something too, so they they embellished and added quite a bit, and that was that was epic for lack of a better term.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It's I like how it it uh it starts off militaristic and it does take this turn into cinematic, and then it goes back to just sort of militaristic It reminds me of the music for Metal Slug. That's what it reminds me of.
SPEAKER_02Okay. It sounds like how area one would be today. Because it you know, they have longer musical loops now for levels, and it just that was so good. That was really, really nice.
SPEAKER_01Incredible to uh incredible to me. You know, the composer goes to the game designer and goes, so okay, so how long do I have? How much memory do I have for this music? Oh, you you got about 40 seconds. Make it sound good repeatedly. What? Like a crazy demand to make of a composer.
SPEAKER_03But they pulled it off with a lot of those.
SPEAKER_01With a lot. Uh gosh, the earworm that always gets in my head, because I think it's like a 23-second loop or something, is um bubble bobble.

But um, this was submitted to OCR back in March of 2024 by Trait, uh which I've never heard of them prior to this, but it is an awesome song. Uh called The Edge Runner with Blazing Hair. And if you catch that reference, uh that is calling out Cyberpunk 2077, which is another game I love. And did like an episode focusing on that just because it's such a unique sound. Uh so either I am sorry ahead of time or I hope you enjoy this. I'm not sure which way this goes, but uh if you listen to something go ahead. With blazing hair by trait.

So if you replay that level, you'll immediately like pick up on that song too. Like, oh yes, awesome.

Uh Wake, Eric MG, Brandon Hardish, D. Luke Dolomite, Ivan Hackstock, and John Stacey. Um this is a track that was released in September 2023. And uh all of the artists that I just named, they actually created this music. They did the choice of using musicians instead of using um like virtual instrumentation, which I think makes it sound so so good. Uh yeah, so I'll talk more about it when we get back. But this is Waka Waka. Uh yeah, so that was going to be Waka Waka, a remix of Inter Waka from Okamie. Again, one of the best games ever.

SPEAKER_01I'm so I'm I'm also currently playing Persona 5, and I've gotten to this groove where like I will just marathon the game until I get through a palace, and then I need to take a break for a month.

SPEAKER_01But uh back to this Okami track, uh I really, really like the pairing of the French horn and the trumpet. Those just sound so good together.
SPEAKER_02I thought it was a just an interesting mix because I've I've listened to a lot of um, again, there's only I think six remixes on OCR, unfortunately. But like I've seen a lot of like uh definitely piano renditions or even like string renditions. I've never seen like the mix of we have horns and like classic instruments, but then here's an electric piano, and just like it's a very interesting mesh of instrumentation and just it fits so well. It was really, really good. It jived well with me.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, the the lounge energy was amazing for that. Like I I know this can sound funny, but like in my head, like video games are for kids, and then they're like, Yeah, but what if we made it for adults? And I don't know, it's just it's a fun late night. Like, I don't drink, but I imagine that's a fun chill at the lounge and just slowly enjoy your whiskey sort of thing.

Uh oh, actually now that I think about it, I'm bringing two Sega games. Oh boy. So this is uh from Sonic CD, but specifically the Japanese soundtrack. So for those unaware, um uh Sonic CD had two almost completely different soundtracks because the original soundtrack was very much a like uh mid-90s club type vibe. Uh and Sega of America didn't think that would sell as well, so they redid the soundtrack for the US. And there's a million flame wars that you can uh read backlogs of if you want to figure out which soundtrack is better. But this is specifically from uh the Japanese soundtrack from the uh the level Stardust Speedway, which is the one where you are racing against Metal Sonic. And it is a very big shift genre-wise from everything else we've listened to today, so I'm just gonna let that speak for itself.

Uh, and I was just mentioning to uh the BBB crew here that Overclocked Assembled also did a epic three-part Super Smash Brothers rap where uh every verse is in character as a different character, and it's a delight.
SPEAKER_02I can't wait to listen to that. I'm going to like I I have it, like I will be listening to that because I need to know. I just need to have that in my ear holes. But no, this this was fabulous. I just sat here and boped to it the whole listen.

SPEAKER_02Um In what is it, Sonic Adventures 2, there's the one level where you play as Knuckles and it's a rap song that plays, and that's what this reminds me of, but this is so much better, and I just want to listen to this for all the Sonic games. This was so well done, just like from top to bottom, was the level of production for remixes has just grown immensely from you know, the back way back in the olden days when you had to download it through dialogue, and it was just I recorded this with you know through the computer and a role. Crappy mic of me just rapping. It's the quality and just has gotten so much better because the technology just every like I just love how talented some of these people are, and it's just amazing. And I'm glad that they share it with us.

SPEAKER_01Uh I really enjoy the lyrics to this track, also. There's one verse that is nothing but I'm going to work in the names to all the zones from Sonic CD into this verse. Uh that I really enjoy. Uh, and then there's the one lyric in particular that I love. Um Mario was blip blop while Sonic Team was hip-hop, cranking out fly tunes way before iTunes. It's so good. Uh growing up a Sega kid, I I've always felt that everything Sega was just like ever so slightly ahead of its time. Uh Sega CD most definitely included in that.
SPEAKER_02I would agree with that. And I that's coming from a huge Nintendo kid here. Like I it's it's a shame that Sega imploded the way that it did through horror business decisions, we would say. It just it they did such good stuff and it was really innovative for the time, but no one realized it until much too late.

SPEAKER_04Yeah, I I think you bring up at the front of this with the fact that Sonic CD, uh America and Japan had two different soundtracks. Because from what I remember, that was probably their biggest problem in the background. The fact that, like, uh sorry, I almost said Nintendo, Sega of America and Sega Japan just wanted to operate so differently and they just could not get on the same page. And it's at the point where like when they rushed out the Saturn and they like just basically kneecapped it right out the gate of like, oh, it's available today, have it, kids. And people like, wait, what you just announced and it's in stores? Like, what's going on?
SPEAKER_01Not just that, but like the 32x was still brand new. Like, wait, wait, hang on. You can't release the Saturn yet. The 32X isn't even a year old.
SPEAKER_04I did have a lot of fun with Dreamcast when you mentioned uh it being ahead of its time, like, or we were saying, like, yeah, the Dreamcast was amazing. SegaNet, I could look on a web browser and it felt like the future, and then I had Choo Choo Rocket where I could play online with people and uh Choo Choo Rocket was such a fun time. That there's that. Uh, I think Alien Front Online was another like weird. There's so many weird, quirky games of like that genre, that era, I should say, is just oh, it's not the same anymore, but you know, whatever, old happens. Um, I I will say I am excited because I never played Saturn because as we just mentioned, it kind of died immediately. Um, but I I bought from a friend uh like retrofitted Saturn with like optical disk drives so I can just play all the games. So I've been making up for lost time and it's amazing. Oh, excellent.
SPEAKER_01Uh if uh if you are at all interested in RPGs, which I suspect having listening to your podcast, you might be. Um they are are you are you aware of the weirdness of Shining Force Three? No, never touch a shining. Oh man, okay. First of all, you need to, but um Shining Force Three in particular was weird because uh it was a game that came on three discs in Japan, and each disc was like a different uh it did the same thing as Suicid and Three, where it was uh the same story but told from three different main character perspectives, and each one was a different disc. And would you like to guess how many of those discs Sega of America brought to the US?
SPEAKER_04Oh no, really?
SPEAKER_01Half of one, I assume. Just one. Uh yeah, at least we got a full one and not just half of one. Uh thankfully, uh as of about like two years ago, fan translators have done a full translation of the other two discs. But oh my gosh. Sega, why?
SPEAKER_02God, that it the way Sega of America operated, it reminds me a lot of just how four kids would treat American children for anime of just like, well, they're not gonna understand. We gotta like edit everything out. It's just like, what are you doing? You are creating a completely different piece of just media here. This is nothing like the source material.
SPEAKER_01Oh, so those are what donuts look like in Japan.
SPEAKER_02I am a huge Sailor Moon fan, and there are I came across a website that, like, yeah, some four kids episodes of Sailor Moon has like maybe 15% original content. It's so edited down, it's so bad. It's just like that's what that like you're taking two-thirds of the game away and just here you go, kids. Why did the Saturn fail? We don't know. Like, okay, come on.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, Shining Force 3 is uh it's a pretty good time. Like uh I I wish every Sega console had succeeded, but especially the Saturn and Dreamcast. The Saturn, I don't think, got a fair shot in the US, and the Dreamcast didn't get a fair shot anywhere. Not a fair shot in my household. I salute you, sir.
SPEAKER_02Because it was the most powerful system when it released, wasn't it? The Dreamcast.
SPEAKER_01Oh, most definitely. Like putting on uh playing a Dreamcast game for the first time, being used to like the PS1 and the N64, uh, it was uh the I feel like the last time I really felt there was a generational leap in graphics quality. Like just astoundingly better. Um fun Dreamcast fact. Uh a little bit of Dreamcast tech is in your pocket right now. The company that made the graphics chip for the Dreamcast has gone on to basically produce the graphics hardware in every mobile phone.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that's crazy.
SPEAKER_01But anyway, uh Joshua, would you like to introduce your last track?
SPEAKER_03So for my last track, I definitely deviated from both my plan and the sounds of my previous two because I went into my part of planning for this episode with I'm gonna take tracks I've already done on our show and bring a remix version of it here to your show. But I'm not doing that with the last one. It's never not never been featured on our show before. Um because I came across the listing when I was trying to you know browse for something that I would like to bring, and um Wizards and Warriors came across, and I'm like, oh, I love the music from Wizards and Warriors, and I haven't featured it on our show yet. And and I wanted to hear what kind of remixes they had in store there. And I found a track that um is the title screen theme, because I'm known at least on our show as the guy that brings press start music every time. Um but the original press start music from Wizards and Warriors is a 37-second track. This uh remix is four minutes and sixteen seconds, and as soon as I started playing this, it just brought an ear-to-ear grin on my face. So that's gonna be that what I have in store for my final pick is the uh title train the title screen from Wizards and Warriors, uh, originally composed by, of course, David Wise, with the remix done by Groden Groby. Okay, so what did you guys think of my little club remix of uh the Wizards and Warriors title screen? Um they did oh sorry, go ahead, Laura.
SPEAKER_02Oh, they did so much with because I'm one that is very familiar with this game, that is a short, short loop, and they did so much, and that was fantastic. That was great.
SPEAKER_01So the first thing I want to say is that so first of all, I don't think we said the title of the remix, which is Grosse Lederhosen, which now my German isn't great, but I think that just means big pants. Um and uh yeah, very fun, uh super dancy track that's like uh there's a there's a hang on, there's a term for this uh subgenre of electronica, happy hardcore, I think. Yeah, yeah. Very like delightful, enjoy it, very enjoyable happy hardcore track.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that that that was just a good time. We were talking earlier about songs being DDR. This would be uh a 10 to 11 footer, but that would be a good this would be a very tough track. I've never heard anything from hey, I haven't heard anything from uh Wizards and Warriors, and so that was in my mind, this is what that entire Nintendo game soundtrack sounds like now. So thank you for that.
SPEAKER_02The music's good, but it's a real short loop, and um I almost brought something from it for our NES episode, but I didn't because it is it's a real short loop, and all of the music that I could find for it was like a four-hour loop, or not four hour, but like a four-minute loop of loop.
SPEAKER_03Was it the low health music?
SPEAKER_02Yes, yes, four-minute loop of just like I dude no low health music though is it's literally a six-second loop, but like it's so good.
SPEAKER_03It's aggressive and loud and it's it's like the sonic drowny music, but not upsetting.
SPEAKER_02It's abrasive, it's abrasive, maybe not upsetting, but it hurts your ears.
SPEAKER_01I'm trying to to square uh you saying the six-second loop is so good with your earlier statement that bubble bubble has terrible music. Well no, I've I've uh I'm only familiar with Wizards and Warriors because David Wise. What what is what kind of game is it? What genre of game are we discussing here?
SPEAKER_03So it's like an action platformer, but it has um it was one of the earliest games I can remember where it had like non-linear progression. So the levels are kind of like open, um and you gotta hop around as this little knight um in armor with the worst hit box ever. Like the sword never felt like it was effective until you get throwing weapons. Did you ever feel powerful in that game? But you just kind of go around the levels, you gotta find keys to open the doors, and then you can find you can and then you get like power-ups, like permanent power-ups, like eventually you get a potion that lets it so that you can levitate in place somewhere to like so you can't like fly upwards, but you can like fly parallel, and then you get one that does let you like float upwards at a slow pace, and things that let you fall without taking damage, and like it it's kind of you know, like within the each level, you kind of have to like just kind of roam around, find all the things until you find the the um there'll be a key that'll let you go into the boss door, and then you move on to the next level. I think it's like like five or six levels like that, but um it was pretty tough. You got infinite continues, but you got three lives, and if you lost your lives, you started the whole level over again.
SPEAKER_01Are you positive you're not just describing Zelda 2? Thank you.
SPEAKER_02It's not Zelda 2. I promise you it's not Zelda 2.
SPEAKER_01Which incidentally, Zelda 2 was my first Zelda. Talk about an entrance into the series.
SPEAKER_02It's a unique one, that's for sure.
SPEAKER_01You know, it's what the rental store had. I I wonder why.
SPEAKER_03Oh, our next one is going to be Cook's last one of the day, right?
SPEAKER_04Yep. Alright, so my last pick. Uh there were a couple things when we're talking about like prepping for this episode. And I know Joshua, you mentioned, like, oh, you know, what if we pull stuff from you know from our, you know, that we've covered. And I was like, I'll just pull whatever. Somehow I landed on all three being stuff that we did bring to our show. I mentioned that earlier. Um, but this one is going to be a huge tonal shift uh because this is my window music. Uh as far as like video games go, this is the source song, not this song specifically, but the source song is one of my top three favorite game songs of all time. Uh and it's from the sequel to Final Fantasy VII called Final Fantasy X II. Uh, and the song is Kuan Memories of Waves of and Light. And that's a slight dig at Pocky because or sorry.
SPEAKER_01Oh sorry, go ahead.
SPEAKER_04I was saying that, and if anyone wants to at me for that, uh that's a slight dig at Joshua because uh he does not believe me that Final Fantasy X is a sequel to seven, but we'll we'll we digress. Uh but the song sorry, go ahead. I was gonna say I was just gonna introduce the song. Oh yeah, so the song that I'm bringing uh is called So What Goes, and it was remixed by Kabuki Bear, and this was released uh back in August of 2018 on OC Remix. But uh it's normally a gentle piano song, and this it's usually a little bit sad, but they kind of like pop it up. Um, but they stay true, and it's just full played on piano, so full live instrumentation on this one, but it is just a beautiful song. So um, let's go ahead and jump into that one then.
SPEAKER_01All right. My first thought is Kabuki Bear is such a good screen name.
SPEAKER_04Okay, so bringing us back again. That was um So It Goes by Kabuki Bear. And like I said, it was originally a piano track, and it was a lot more solemn, but I don't know. What are your thoughts?
SPEAKER_01I really enjoyed it. Uh Solo Piano, I think, is something that OCR does really well in general. Um, I was looking to see what else Kabuki Bear has done, and uh it's just Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy X too. So strictly sequels to Final Fantasy X. You like what you like.
SPEAKER_02Piano? No, that was really, really pretty. I I love I love a good piano remix of anything. Um that was that was so nice. I really like that.
SPEAKER_03I'm in the same boat. I love a good piano version of any track. I've I've shouted her out on our show before too, but I'll shout her out here. There's a YouTuber, Cara Compareto. She does video game music a lot, and she does live streams on Saturdays where she'll take like requests and stuff. And man, I listen to her channel all the time just because I love hearing a piano version of anything I've I'm used to. And that one was one of my favorite Final Fantasy XI songs. If I lump those two together, and that was a beautiful version of it. I I enjoyed every second of that.
SPEAKER_01I um it has been a minute since I played Final Fantasy XI, uh, and by a minute I mean like 20 years. Uh remind me the context in the game in which this song plays.
SPEAKER_04This is the, if you will, the press art music. Um, much like Kingdom Hearts, the Dearly Beloved start before you actually do it. This is effectively like this and Dearly Beloved at the same time were like the one-two punch where I just love Square for the rest of my life. They can do no wrong. Yeah, I I just really want to uh for my last book make sure like you said, there's a lot of good representation on OCR with uh with piano tracks, and you know, I we can only bring three songs and there's so many I want to pull where you know I just there are many, many great piano tracks, and I wanted to make sure I included at least one of them uh with my selections, and I don't know, it's a beautiful song to end on for my choice.
SPEAKER_01Well, if you're gonna complain about only three, we might just have to do this again sometime.
SPEAKER_02Oh no, more good music.
SPEAKER_04Um might be more Majora's Mask by then.

SPEAKER_01I I I'm not gonna say a lot, but uh let's just say don't be surprised if there is more Majora's Mask music soon.
SPEAKER_04That means Laura is your next song a Majora's Mask song as well.
SPEAKER_02It is not, it is not, um, but it is another game that I one have a tattoo of and two I have done an episode on. Um it's going to be Love Everlasting by DDR Kirby ISQ, uh, which the reading into this, um, this is gonna be from a remix of Lonely Rolling Star from Katamari Damasy. Uh this was released in August 2014. Um and this was a chiptune-infused Katamari, uh it just works really well. And that this was actually the title track for an album, uh Love Ever Love Everlasting that DDR Kirby did, which is a tribute album that is a rearrangement of tracks from a different album called The Black Box, which I listened to both The Black Box and then Love Everlasting, and both are awesome chiptune-y goodness music, and it's fabulous.
SPEAKER_01I uh on the topic of the black box at Magfest this year, I got to see Ivy and Surushu live, and they did several tracks from the black box. That it was great, great concert.
SPEAKER_02It's like I like, oh, like, oh, this is a tribute track, like tribute album. That's awesome. Well, let me listen to like the whole Love Everlasting album, which was fabulous. Let me track down the black box, which is also absolutely fabulous. And so it I cannot recommend both albums enough. Um, but getting into it, this is Love Everlasting by DDR Kirby from Katamari. So that is Love Everlasting uh by DDR Kirby, uh just a catamari lonely rolling star, and it's just perfection. And I thought that was just a great track for me to end on.
SPEAKER_01I I think it's perfection because if you listen to the original track, there is like chip noises and chip instruments in that original track. And I feel like what DDR Kirby did here is basically like, hey, clearly this was originally a Game Boy piece, let's just, you know, bring that to the front.
SPEAKER_02It's I I think my favorite part of like again, I love chip tune, but just the infusion of Kirby superstar music is just it melds so well to just that style of just happy poppy music because it sounds like it could even be Kirby music. It just it's so good. DDR Kirby is great at what they do, and I loved the album that I listened to, and I want to find more of their stuff because the music that you brought by DDR Kirby was also fantastic, it's just it's great.
SPEAKER_04You know, I was just grinning. I'm sorry, go ahead. I was just saying, I was just grinning that entire song. Like I love the Katamari soundtrack, and then yeah, that that was handled so well, and it didn't feel gimmicky. You know, it it it it's super easy to step into that, like, oh we'll just make it all chippy and no, that just I don't know, it felt really nice. I liked it.
SPEAKER_01You know, I've uh I've talked with OCR judges before. So like one of the big differences between old school OCR and modern OCR is there's a and this has been in place for over a decade, uh more than over a decade. Um but there there is a you know pretty rigorous judging process for when you submit a track. And judges have told me that it's really difficult to judge a chiptune track because uh a lot of the original source material is chipton, so you've got to vary it up enough. But also, you know, you need like the they have very high music production standards, and it's uh it's it can be very difficult to meet that standard for chiptunes. Um so I'm glad this one got in, is I guess what I'm going for.
SPEAKER_02It's something that like I found very interesting about just how OCR does run things, is that like, oh, it is judge, like it's not just random, it's not it's not the equivalent of YouTube of anybody can upload everything. And like you do have a level like of quality control, which I appreciate because you're gonna put your OCR brand onto it, so you do want it to have a certain standard of just quality, and it's it's really good. I I'm sure it's disappointing to people that don't get their tracks like accepted, but I think that like you know gives you something to like work towards, which is nice, frustrating, but nice, I'm sure.
SPEAKER_01Well, it's uh yeah, uh the the judges panel, my understanding I've never submitted a track, but the judges panel, my understanding is takes mentorship very seriously. So, you know, if you uh submit a track, and as long as it's not utter and complete trash, they will just give you pointers here, have free advice, take this advice into account and please resubmit your track. That's good.
SPEAKER_02I like that.
SPEAKER_01Uh and also, I mean, all the judges have like the judges don't get a free pass, they have to submit their tracks. Uh so uh at the OCR panel this ye uh at uh VGM Con, I remember uh someone said, Hey, everyone in the room, raise your hand uh if you've had a uh track rejected by the judges panel, and literally all of the judges raised their hand.
SPEAKER_04Nice. Yeah, I thought I remember when I was looking to pick a track, I was looking at DJ Pretzel had a uh a Tetris track from way, way, way back. Uh um Slavic roots. I thought I remember during the notes, he was like, Yeah, you know, if I had submitted this, you know, this nowadays, I probably wouldn't have taken this because it's so close. Like it's you know, new instrumentation, but it's like I would have wanted a lot more variation with like you know how I play with this, that, and the others. Like, oh that's like you said, it's cool that they are hard on themselves who there is that standard there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, I I feel like uh in in any like online platform where users can submit things, a little curation goes a long way. Like, I would have played so much more Mario Maker if the levels were better curated. Yes.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. No, I do it's good to hear that, like, oh yeah, we're on the judge's panel, but we're also held to the same standard. It's not just like, well, they're a judge, so obviously they do good stuff. Like, no, you gotta you're get in line with the rest of them. That's nice.

SPEAKER_01So this is the end credits track for Skies of Arcadia. Um did any of you play Skies of Arcadia?
SPEAKER_04Yes, it was a romping good time.
SPEAKER_01Skies of Arcadia to me is like the platonic ideal of this era of JRPG. Like the the late 90s, early 2000s style of JRPG, the best example in the world is Skies of Arcadia. Um it's my favorite game of all time. Um until recently, uh recently on the internet, I've been going by the mononym Zack with an exclamation point. But before that, my username on everything, and I mean everything, was Vice of Arcadia.
SPEAKER_12All right, all right.
SPEAKER_01Um yeah, this is a uh Sega Dreamcast RPG from the year 2000. Uh it was composed by uh Tatsuyuki Maeira and Yutaka Minobe, uh, who are famous for working uh mostly on um Panzer Dragoon. Uh and I think um uh uh Sonic Advance. Uh so they went to work on Sonic Advance. Um but they wrote this uh uh absolutely incredible uh orchestral score, and the original piece sort of like um opens with uh uh the main theme of the game and then goes into some original music and then closes with this like big sweeping orchestral. It's absolutely gorgeous. I own the soundtrack on vinyl and listen to it regularly. Uh and this version is more like a uh chamber music version where let's strip down the full orchestra to uh just a couple of instruments, um clarinet, flute, uh wonderful stuff. So let's uh let's just jump right in. I'm gonna press play. Yeah. Alright. So bringing us back, that was the end credits theme for Skies of Arcadia. The overclocked remix Hearth and Home by Juke. And that was from the Skies of Arcadia OC remix album called Arcadia Legends. And the whole album's excellent. I highly recommend it. But um gosh. I was saying while the song was playing that to me this is like the platonic ideal of this era of JRPG. It's just if you imagine an RPG from the year 2000 and the best possible RPG from the year 2000 that exists, and it's called Skies of Arcadia.
SPEAKER_02It was such a joyous piece of music. Because it did like it was very grand and very just like high adventure, but I it was just I can picture the airships, I guess. Like that's that it invoke the feeling of we're sailing the skies and going just going, and it's great.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the the the game is explicitly set in sort of the age of sail, uh only in the sky. So you know, the the main characters are all air pirates, and sort of the main bad guys of the game are basically the Spanish Empire. Uh there's even a whole plot line where they have very clearly colonized uh North America or South America rather, and uh, you know, the game's equivalents of the uh Aztecs or Mayans are not super happy about the Spanish presence.
SPEAKER_02Shocker. No, that's I'm now I don't even really jive with JRPGs too much, but I'm upset that they didn't re-release this. That sounds rad.
SPEAKER_01I have a small shrine in my office, and every day I light a candle in the hopes that they'll put it on switch to virtual console, please Sega. Please Nintendo.
SPEAKER_02I joked with the um announcement for the remake of Ocarina of Time. I'm like, boy, how embarrassing for Nintendo that they misspelled Majora's mask, right? Oh, this it's the music was beautiful, and so I definitely want to check out the rest of this album because I'm sure it's going to sound as amazing as this did.
SPEAKER_01I I think the game is an utter joy and everyone should play it, but at the very least, check out the uh soundtrack. The whole soundtrack is excellent. I um I almost brought uh the main character Vice's theme. There's an excellent remix of it that I uh almost brought instead of this, but I I did want those end credits vibes. Uh everyone just talked at once.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that was fine.
SPEAKER_04Go ahead, Joshua.
SPEAKER_03Uh it's got me curious, though, after hearing that one, to hear the original track that it was uh a remix of, because that to me didn't sound like it couldn't have just been the end credits to that game.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the um the original, like I said, this is much more of a chamber music version, whereas the original is full orchestra. Okay. Um I'll I'll I'll share a link with you later. Um the original track is also gorgeous.
SPEAKER_04Which by the way, thank you for sharing all these, because uh at first I like looked at the chat and I was like, oh, there's a couple songs, and I was like, oh, a lot of lovely stuff to listen to when we're done.
SPEAKER_01Uh you know, I um I sometimes think about all of the knowledge I've accrued over my almost 40 years on planet Earth, and boy, there's a whole lot of brain space dedicated to, oh yeah, there's this one really cool overclocked remix.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, uh I have a bunch of useless game knowledge that I will info dump on everybody about Zelda till the cows come home and just it's not gonna do me really any good in real life, but also it's good info for me to have.
SPEAKER_01There's a gosh, there's this YouTube channel I've been addicted to recently, which is uh this guy who's just going through the decompiled source code to Zelda games and finding bugs and like explaining, oh yeah, here's why this bug happens, here's how we fix it. And I've uh as a as a Zelda fan and computer programmer, I have been just addicted to this content. That's amazing.
SPEAKER_04Oh, that is super rad. I the only thing I've seen like that was uh they're talking about the stick in Ocarina Time to Majora's mask about like, oh well, this one was only a 32-bit graphic and supposed to be uh 64, and like so it's only half the stick. That's why it looks different, despite being the same. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01I I remember that now.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and it's like that is neat, and I would be a problem if I dig any further into this because I will absolutely just watch all the all the dig you know's that are available to me.
